Reflections
So. I attended the AEPtitude Exhibition at NAFA. It was an interesting and inspiring experience, to say the least. The works were of a very high quality! Some of those I found more engaging, to me…
Hiding From My Shadow, Jolene Lee, Hwa Chong Institution (college), 2006
I wonder how this was done, it’s very impressive. The theme of a lost childhood, growing up. The characters were all rather simplistic and childlike, as if from a storybook, but with the colou adding a somewhat ominous aura. The accompanying text was insightful, I felt and really helped to bring the story and the theme along. What was most amazing was how she chose to present it, the various layers, lines, mediums used created a diverse picture, everything melding together to capture your attention. I liked especially how she made the main characters stand out and how she created a sense of distance with the many layers.

This left a big impression on me because of how she chose to present it as well as her concept. Rebirth and destruction, a continuous cycle. The lights created a beautiful ambience, all shadow and light and the various clay(?) persons were well crafted. Especially dramatic was the smashed clay piece representative of a person on the floor, and the bird. I was interested in how she was able to suspend the heavy round things with the fabric, which looked kind of thin. A rather mysterious and philosophical piece. I like. Haha.
This was just a simple painting, but a very well done piece, with neat controlled lines blended with rough ones. I liked the use of colours and the the various elements included, like butteflies, and the girl and the babies. Drawing and food and flowers, hands. I wasn’t sure exactly what this piece was about, but in a way the vagueness of it appeals to me too. The transition, examining one section after another was like reading story, a travel or journey of sorts, each segment overlapping into the next. (:
City Of Lights, Janice Tan, Hwa Chong Institution (college), 2006
The carving! The sand! The lights! Yeah, all that. The use of shadow and light to create contrast, the intricacy of the carving. How do you carve something like that anyway. Brilliant.
(Can’t remember the title or artist, but anyway.)
Large canvas painting, interesting composition, beautiful colour, good control of medium. Everything looked very realistic. The only thing was the inconsistency of the things on the table and those mirrored. Not sure if it was intentional or accidental though, but the whole thing was still very bright and cheerful. The size of it must have made it rather difficult to draw and paint?
Mm. (: I See Similar Diversities, Teow Yuechan, NJC

Lifesized cardboard people looking very lifelike indeed. Being the unattentive person that I was, I kept catching these cardboard people out of the corner of my eye and thinking that they were real. For a moment. Ahaha. The shadows and creases and clothes and expressions were done really well. The concept, and the seemingly oxymoronic title particularly interested me.
Time Present, Time Past, Alvin Ong, NJC

A very beautiful painting, consisting of two panels on opposite sites of the room. Never noticed until I stood in the center, haha. The colours are really well chosen, I like the tree, the idea of a vanishing point, the walls and buildings. How it relates to the concept I’m not so sure, but it is an impressive piece of work. Great attention to detail too, like the tiles and the archway and the tables even have appropriate graffiti on them.

I saw this at our school before! And when the artist was doing it too. Very interesting concept, and the irony, the play on words, the clay(?) pieces, very well made.

I have a question: did she make the doll or did she buy it, or borrow it? It looks awfully pretty and doll-like. Where’d she get all the materials, like the dress? It’s a very big installation, very impressive given the size and the work involved. The painted walls were very well done, the colour well coordinated. The concept appealed to me. (Most people seem to be doing somethin about childhood and happiness or loss, or something???). One of my favourite pieces.
Anorexia. Very well drawn illustration, with clean lines and colouring and interesting concepts in each panel. You can feel that it’s a rather personal topic. I can’t quite remember where I saw this before, somewhere in out school too, but not the full thing. The artist put a lot of effort in. Especially like the symbolism and imagery of the puppet, fool’s hat and etc. I chanced upon her blog while googling this exhibition, and remember her feeling irked that people commented that Anorexia was too common a theme, too cliched, when she was really trying to do something close to her heart. I agree, art is built upon cliches, because cliches are only what they are because we keep feeling these feelings, fearing these same things, why frown upon what makes us human? Art isn’t simply about being original, doing something devastatingly new, it’s about doing what you want.
Fashioning Japan, Cheong Sze Yenn, CHIJ Toa Payoh

Fashion design. I like the costumes, very creative, the way they were presented was unique too. Given that I have an interest in Japanese culture, I found this piece exciting and interesting (I have a limited vocab, Boo.) and one thing I found special was the shadows, especially the costume involving curls and circles. Exploration of theme and culture of another was nicely done. (:
There were more, but these were the ones which stood out. Others that I remember but lack good photos of include the comic, modelled after Warcraft I think, or some other game. It was like a real comic, well illustrated and all. And the postcard project done by my senior Shu Wen, which was very poetic and had excellent, emotive pictures. Wish I could take pictures like that. (:
All in all, an enriching experience. I feel intimidated by all these works though, a bit. All well.
Take One
Wire found himself down a lonely road, walking…
Something jarred against his feet and he slipped, felt the momentum pitch him forwards…
… forwards…
He fell. Hard.
Wire: D:
Wire: ;___;
Wire felt blue. So blue his surroundings turned blue too. And no one came to help him, because he was on a lonely road…
